My essay is on how organisations are reacting to the new knowledge economy. I am focusing particularly on New Zealand organistions and how the government is encouraging NZ as a country to support this new direction. If anyone is doing anything vaguely similar, let me know

February 3, 2007 at 1:56 pm | Posted in Uncategorized | Leave a commentThrough my tagging of technology, I found a blog that related to my idea - that a crazy idea is all thats needed in today’s society.
Here it is:
So, if you’re going to start a company, you better have an idea so radical that most people think it’s crazy. Dell sounded crazy — a personal computer company started in the teeth of an enormous recession in the industry. People thought the idea behind Netscape was nuts — everybody told us we’d never amount to anything. Google sounded like a crazy idea — another search engine, started in 1998, growing right through the dot-com meltdown. It seemed like complete lunacy. Of course, the problem is that a lot of ideas that sound crazy are crazy. So for every Dell, Netscape, and Google, you get 300 companies with crazy ideas that fail.
This blog also reiterates my point that Fixed assets and capital are no longer the most important things in order for a business to succeed. A single idea, with the help of technology can be all that’s needed.
Lecture 3
February 3, 2007 at 1:29 pm | Posted in Knowledge | 3 CommentsIt is essential today for businesses to keep up to date with information and knowledge, in order for them to maintain a competitive advantage in the market. Connectivity plays a key role in businesses being able to access info. The most recent technology is often essential for businesses to keep their processes up to date.
The constantly changing environments and economies puts pressure on firms to be constantly innovating.
Things become irrelevant very quickly.
The internet has allowed businesses to transact internationally with ease. Geographical boundaries no longer exist and global trade is becoming much easier.
Capital and fixed assets are becoming a thing of the past. We have moved from the industrial to the post industrial era otherwise known as the knowledge and info era. Ideas are becoming more and more important. Large amounts of capital and assets are no longer needed for a sucessfull business. Take trade me for example. That started with a simple idea and was eventually sold for millions!
Information are knowledge are the key in today’s society, but to gain access to this, bussinesses need to be in touch and connected to the latest technology and software.
Lecture 6
February 3, 2007 at 1:19 pm | Posted in Uncategorized | Leave a commentBlogs and other similar interactive web 2.0 tools are what the youth of today like to communicate with about issues such as politics. These kinds of issues are not typical everyday youth conversations and blogging provides and ideal environment for youth to discuss these issues. Sometimes they may not feel comfortable expressing their ideas in other environments, but blogging gives people confidence to express ideas which they might not have otherwise dones. If the government and Mp’s understood and could use this technology more competently, they would sonn realise it is a great way to involve youth of today.
Lecture 2
February 2, 2007 at 1:02 pm | Posted in Uncategorized | Leave a commentMany people begin using the internet as individuals. Individuality appears to be the key in today’s society. Acting as an indiviadual makes it easier to find other individuals with similar interests and this is how networks form. The inetrnet can give people the confidence needed to be themselves, or even the opportunity to be what they want to be -they can completely change their identity if they want (identity fluidity)
Normal offline hierachies don’t appear to be as prevalent and many would argue that they don’t exist, although others argue that new hierachies simply replace the old ones.
Overall though, i believe a more equal social interaction apeears to occur.
Lecture 4
February 2, 2007 at 12:51 pm | Posted in Third Places | 2 CommentsInvisible Colleges were discussed today. They provide people with an informal environment, before making it formal. It is a place (or space??) to test new ideas and allows you to collaborate with new people.
Third places were also discussed today and interested me quite alot. These are places other than home or work. It is described as a neutral ground where conversation is the main activity. Online forums are currently being described as third places as they draw people with common interests. To many this could be the case, they may feel comfortable in these situations, exchanging as equals.
To me this isn’t the case. Cyber is unfamilar to me and I therefore don’t feel that comfortable using it and I would rather communicate F2F with someone, as I would find that environment more neutral. However, I can see how many people would view cyber as an ideal third place.
Also discussed were the concepts of information and knowledge. I beleive there is quite clearly a difference between them. Information is simply material and facts and these need to be organised and converted and understood in order for it to become knowledge.
It must be in a useable state.

This is what someone else had tagged as blog:
As you all well know, anyone can post a comment on this blog. All that is required is typing in an email address and name. Neither of those are verified, so it is realtively easy to be an imposter of someone else.
Note well that the blog stores the IP address of each comment, so although you may think you are anonymous, in practice you are not.
I expect people to behave here with the same level of respect that they have on the CSFBL forums. Clear and blatant abuse will be reported to your Internet Service Provider as appropriate.
I thought this related to my blog of lecture 5 as they are also saying that in a way people are more confident blogging as email addresses and names are not necessarily verified, so it is easy to remain unknown or act as an imposter.

Lecture 5
February 2, 2007 at 9:51 am | Posted in Blog | Leave a commentThe realtionship between society and technology was discussed today. There are several competing theories of technology. Instrumentalism, Substantivism and Social Constructivism were all discussed. When you think about each of these ideas they all seem to make sense. In a way its confusing how they do all make sense, because how do you know which one is right??
It was interesting to learn from the readings, how blogging is used in so many different ways. People often find it easier to express themselves through blogs, because although they know that other people are reading them, the elimination of the F2F element, gives them more confidence to say what they want.
The mass info that blogging and the net provide is amazing and can be overwhelming. It is sometimes hard to sort through this info and work out what is actaully true and what is being distorted. We must be careful what we beleive.
